How do our products work?
Our multi-layer reflective insulation enhances the performance of mass insulation by increasing the thermal efficiency without occupying or increasing space. These reflective insulation products employ two highly reflective surfaces to help stop radiant heat transfer and send it back to its source. This is a feature not offered by mass insulation.

These reflective surfaces are joined by a patented blanket. This blanket Is similar to the blanket insulation NASA developed for astronauts to use in outer space.  Our patented, center core helps prevent conductive and convective heat transfer.  Adding this technology between the two outer layers of aluminum design makes it also resistant to the transfer of heat by convection and conduction in addition to the reflective properties of the outer layers. This patented technology can add an additional R-value of your insulation by up to 9.



How powerful are our products?
Our multi-layer reflective insulation employs two reflective surfaces that are over 99% pure aluminum which reflects 97% of radiant heat transfer.  Firefighters use aluminum blankets to help protect them from fire storms.  Paramedics use aluminum in emergency blankets. Consider this: NASA uses aluminum properties to help protect our astronauts in space suits. Aluminum is used in the shuttle and lunar module.


Is it environmentally friendly?
Our mission is to help homeowners and businesses conserve energy, save money, and protect the environment. Reducing energy consumption protects the environment and decreases our reliance on foreign energy.  All of Great Lakes Eco Systems products are non-toxic, certified ASTM tested, and have a Class A/Class 1 fire rating.


Have our products been tested?
Yes! Energy tests were conducted at the Johns Manville Technical Center, Littleton, Colorado. Our multi-layer reflective insulation passes the UL1715/UBC 26-3 Room Corner Wall Fire Test and meets all requirements for as required by the 2000 IBC.
Many other products claim a Class 1 rating, however, some bubble-pack or foam core reflective installation products generate a Flame Spread many times the 25 rating required to achieve a Class 1 rating.


How is heat transferred?

Conduction
, Convection and Radiation are the three ways that heat is transferred.

What is conduction heat?
When two surfaces come in contact, the warmer surface gives up heat to the cooler surface as can be seen with a glowing burner on a stove heating the pot it is in contact with. In a building this is limited primarily to studs connecting outer and inner surfaces.

What is convection heat?
The movement of air as a result of air being warmed. Warm air rises seeking the coldest point. Convection is visible as wavy lines above a hot road. Convection is a major concern in the winter, but not in the summer.

What is radiant heat?
Radiant heat travels in all directions striking cooler objects and transfer the heat. This infrared energy is like microwave ovens at a lower frequency. We may not understand infrared radiation but we can learn to make it work for us by learning how to control it and make it work for us.
